Liverpool playmaker Shaqiri forced to defend Switzerland performances

Liverpool playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri defended his quiet display against France as he takes over the captain's armband for the quarter final.

The Swiss take on Spain in the early game on Friday at Euro 2020, with regular skipper Granit Xhaka suspended for the clash.

Given the Arsenal midfielder will not feature, Shaqiri will take the armband in his place.

The winger, who scored twice against Turkey to seal qualification for the round of 16, did not have the best game in the 3-3 draw and subsequent penalty shootout win over France.

"For me, it wasn't easy against France," he said, per the Daily Mail.

"I had a few good spells and helped a lot defensively. This was decisive for the team. I give everything for the team.

"But it doesn't mean I've had a bad game if I don't score or assist.

"I'm proud of the team performance, but also proud of my own performance."
